W.C. Clark: Heart of Gold

     (Black Top Records 1994)

W.C. Clark is a legendary Austin Bluesman.  He was a teacher, fellow player, and inspirational mentor for Stevie Ray Vaughn.  He also wrote "Cold Shot," one of Vaughn's best songs.  I need say no more than quote the liner notes from this album.

"The Blues that comes out of Texas is a special thing.  It's not like Mississippi or Chicago; it didn't go up the river from New Orleans.  Texas Blues evolved out West, where five cultures clashed with one another: Anglo, Mexican, Louisiana-French, German/Slavic, and African American.  * * * *  Texas musicians have always had hybrid vigor.  Players in Texas, no matter what culture they came from, had to play it all 'cause that's what the dancers wanted.  Music was for dancin,' dancin' and courtin', unless you were in the church, and sometimes that was for dancin' and courtin', too.  * * * *

"What held it all together was rhythm: swinging rhythm.  This is what makes Texas blues so special and this is what produced W.C. Clark--the Godfather of Austin Blues."  -Tary Owens, from the Liner Notes to "Heart of Gold."
