You can learn to competently Swing dance in just six weeks by taking Basic Swing.  Doing so will suit you for the average social dance situation, such as weddings, corporate events, dancing at live music shows or clubs every once in a while, and the like.

Lindy Hop is a slightly more complex (but also far more fun) dance that takes a little more time to learn.  But it is well worth it.  Lindy Hop is what drops your jaw when you watch Swing dancers move, and what excites and interests us about Swing dancing.  It is why we travel to the ends of the world to dance, and why we offer classes at substantially below market rates: we want to dance and we want others to be able to dance with us.

"The Lindy Program" is just a fancy way of describing our program for developing complete beginners into competent Lindy Hoppers in just six months.  It includes mostly group lessons, sprinkled with private lessons as time progresses.  Myths (and true stories) abound that it takes years to become a solid, competent Lindy Hopper, and the Program is designed to debunk those myths.  Although it has taken most Lindy Hoppers two to three years to become solid Lindy Hoppers, it need not take so long, and you need not feel so patient or daunted.

The Program:

Basic Swing: 6 weeks; 1 1/2 months total

Swindy Hop: 6 weeks; 3 months total

Lindy I: 6 weeks; 4 1/2 months total

1 or 2 private lessons after week 4 of Lindy I

Lindy II: 6 weeks; 6 months total

1 private lesson after week 2; another after week 4; another after week 6

All students should continue with Lindy II after the first session so as to hone and add to their Lindy Hop skills.  All students should also take Private lessons periodically to receive intense, direct feedback on their dancing.

The Lindy Program emphasizes group lessons in the beginning, and does not suggest private lessons until later in the plan.  The purpose is to learn the basics in a group setting because it is a social dance, after all.  Private lessons are best suited to honing your skills once you have them.  However, Private Lessons are indispensable and completely necessary to successfully completing the plan.

By no means does this program indicate that it is the only way to become a competent Lindy Hopper, or that you will be "all done" after you have completed it.  Indeed, most Lindy Hoppers continue learning about the dance years and years after first learning the basics.  That fact should not daunt anyone because, again, with the Lindy Program, you can become a solid, competent Lindy Hopper after only six months.  Instead, it explains why this dance is so worthwhile to learn: even after years and years, advanced dancers continue to develop new insights and find new things to keep the dance fresh and interesting.  Lindy Hop is simple enough to be learned competently in only six months, and complex enough to excite and keep people interested even after years and decades and generations of dancing it.
