Old Pecan Street Cafe

The Old Pecan Street Cafe is not so unknown as other Restaurants of the month because it is in the heart of downtown on 6th Street.  However, because of its location, it is often overlooked.  Or at least we overlooked it until recently.

Despite its location on the bustling, live-music, party-atmosphere of 6th Street, the Pecan Street Cafe is a very nice, old-world  French Bistro-type place serving crepes, steaks, and other specialty foods.  The decor and atmosphere is also nice and rustic: a slice of the old world French countryside put into the bustle of 6th street.  Service is rumored to be inconsistent (sometimes great, sometimes shoddy), but that is just like being in the French countryside, as well.

"Lunches at the historical, turn-of-the-century location, which previously housed a hardware store, draw the downtown business crowd, while dinner pulls in well-heeled diners seeking a sophisticated, fine-dining experience in a hushed, unhurried atmosphere. Specials include thick charbroiled Texas steaks as well as several stuffed chicken dishes, including Old Pecan Street chicken, a moist breast stuffed plump with pecan pesto. The restaurant's extensive wine list has won accolades from many a connoisseur, and the aromatic in-house bakery turns out warm breads and luscious pastries on order.--Rebecca Chastenet de Gery"
