Jimmy McGriff: Tribute to Basie (Laserlight1996)

Originally recorded and released on the "Solid State" record label in 1966, and later re-released in 1996 on CD by the budget label, Laserlight, "Tribute to Basie" brings together three fantastic elements: the Hammond B-3 Organ, a Big Band, and Count Basie's music.

The Hammond B-3 organ possesses a uniquely, deep, rich tube-amped sound that no synthesized organ has quite yet replaced. Along with Richard "Groove" Holmes, Jack McDuff, and Charles Earland, Jimmy McGriff is one of the greatest of the B-3'ers ever. The Big Band includes many Basie veterans. Matching the leader's powerful organ with a big band was a fitting idea that would be successfully repeated quite a few times in the future. This budget CD also gives one a good sampling of Jimmy McGriff's playing.

As with all of our Albums of the Week, this CD also features several great danceable tunes, including fantastic versions of the seminal standards "Everyday (I Have the Blues)," "Splanky," and "Swingin' the Blues."
