Our first recommendation (if for no other reason than that Lawrence just discovered it by accident the other day) was JAVA NOODLES RESTAURANT. This nondescript restaurant located in a strip mall on East Oltorf Avenue (right near Wan Fu) specializes in Indonesian cuisine. Indonesia is located in the Southern Orient, so the cuisine is similar to, yet pleasantly distinct from Thai food. "Since long before it was adopted by Sun Microsystems in its venture into Internet commerce, 'Java' has been known as the name of the most populous island of the Indonesian archipelago. Java's fertile soil produces a special kind of bean that has been cheering the mornings of millions of people all over the world. Now, here in Austin, you can experience the spectacular taste of Javanese coffe, fresh home-made egg noodles, fresh home-made tempeh and tempting satay... all cooked from 'scratch' from the freshest ingredients." (From the Java Noodles to-go menu). Be not misled by the recommendation. Java Noodles is not fine dining. It is the prototypical dive Oriental restaurant where the decor is plain if not drab, but the food is amazing. What it lacks in decor, Java Noodles more than makes up with the food. Appetizers range from $3-5 and entrees (with huge portions) from $7-$12: most under $9; only 3 dishes out of 28 cost over $10. Also, if you are looking for food whose name you cannot pronounce, no less that you have never tried before, this place is for you. I blindly ordered and enjoyed the Ayam Panggang Bumbe Kare (Grilled Chicken breast in a special Red curry sauce): a well-rewarded "leap of faith." (Sometimes I get a kick out of ordering food where every word in the name comes up as a misspelling on my spell-check :-). Java Noodles is located at 2400 East Oltorf, Suite 14-15. The phone number is 443-JAVA. For a $2 surcharge, they deliver for orders over $12. The $2 charge is worth it because deliveries come with a free order of fried bananas, an Indonesian dessert delicacy. (Fried bananas will definitely be on the menu of the future restaurant, "I Can't Believe They Fried It".)
